Elements Of Design

There are 5 main elements including in design. The room in my house I have chose to talk about is the family area in the basement. The basement has been renovated into a mini apartment design for my boyfriend and I and our expected baby.
The five main elements are:
  • Space
  • Form
  • Line
  • Texture
  • Colour
Space

Space includes the area around and between objects and can give off an emotion depending on how you organize the area. Space has two main choices, you can leave a majority of it empty or you can fill the whole space.
The space used in the basement is spread evenly. The basement furniture includes a pool table, an air hockey table, a couch, two chairs, a TV, a coffee table and a book shelf. There is a built in bar with a sink and cupboards. The furniture is spaced so there is walking room within all the objects, and a large area between the living room and the bedroom doors. This area is a large open space that gives a feeling of freedom and luxury.
The space in the bedroom is confined but each piece of furniture has a proper space for it to be. The furniture in this room includes a bed, one dresser, a bookshelf and two hope chests. Half of the bedroom is being renovated and rearranged for the baby furniture so it is split evenly and we can still feel like there are two rooms in the one area. This area is a designed small space that has two rooms in it for the purpose of not having another area for the baby room. The bedroom still feels comfortable and secure and will be comfortable with having the baby close to us.

Form

Form is the shape and structure of solid objects in the area. These objects can be 2 or 3 dimensional and it may create a specific effect.
The form in the living room area creates a family effect. The form in the living room is a comfortable effect, and has a cozy feeling. The living area has an open concept and gives the effect of entertainment. The open area has a pool table and an air hockey table that will provide fun for anyone that comes over.
The form in the bedroom has mostly rectangular objects in the room, and creates an effect that can give you a loving feeling. At the moment the room is being rearranged to prepare for baby furniture and I find that it has a comfort effect in the room knowing that I am bringing another life into this world.

Line

The line outlines the space and the form of an area. The line can convey a sense of movement or direction and also can be used to convey a sense of strength, serenity, gracefulness or action.
The lines in the family area are vertical and horizontal that can make the room seem wider and higher than the room really is. There is a wood finish on the bottom half of the wall that has vertical lines that can make the room seem higher and longer than it is. The area has a comfortable feeling that is cozy and content.
In the bedroom there are no specific lines because the walls are one colour and nothing has been renovated or painted in the bedroom yet. The only lines that are seen in the bedroom are the lines that are made when the furniture meets the wall. These lines are vertical and horizontal, however the lines that meet the bed and the wall make the room feel like it is wider and longer than the room actually is.

Texture

Texture is the appearance or feel of the surface of an object and can be described as rough or smooth. Textures that may give off emotion or a feeling can be plush carpets that have the feeling of comfort, smooth or velvety have the feeling of luxury and glass, metal or stone have the feeling of coolness.
In the family area all three feelings are in the room. There is the comfort of the carpet, the luxury of the smoothness of the couch and the feeling of coolness through the fire place stone, the wood finish on the bar and the glass coffee table.
In the bedroom there is comfort from the carpet, the mattress, and the blankets. The feeling of comfort is completed on the babies side of the room as there are many soft and plush blankets and toys in the playpen. In the room there are many wood objects such as the bed frame, the hope chests, the dresser and the bookshelf. All of these objects give off coolness and luxury, because of the natural wood finish.

Colour

The colour in a house is the most important aspect of design. The colour can set a mood or illusion in a room.
The colours in the basement are a natural finish wood and a bright cherry red. The natural finish gives a very comfortable feel in the room. The bright cherry red gives a very cheerful effect to the room. The red gives off a bright effect when the lights are on,  and a very comfortable feeling when the lights are off because the colour darkens.
In the bedroom it is a plain light beige colour so it has a comfortable feeling within the room, however when we find out the sex of the baby then the room will be painted to suit the baby and the half of the nursery. Half of the bedroom will be a pastel colour for the nursery and the other half will match the comforter on my bed. The colours will all be a light comfortable feeling that gives off a sense of feeling of the age groups in the room, and also the calmness of the bedroom.

All of these elements make up our "home" inside of a home. The basement has a home feeling to it, and portrays the emotions of comfort.

Buying Process

Step 4: The Buying Process

When looking to progress in your buying process you should have already looked at your finances, what you can afford, and the house that you are looking to buy.

Some people that you may want to get involved with your buying process are:

  • Realtor
  • Lawyer
  • Mortgage Broker
  • Home Inspector
  • Builder (if building new home)
When looking for the right realtor to help you obtain your dream house, you do not want to just pick anyone that can sell houses you want the correct person for you. You may want to interview or ask simple questions to Realtors that you see fit for you.
Use this link to help you in choosing the right realtor.
      Choosing a Realtor

Unless you already have a lawyer, then finding a lawyer will for sure help you in your buying process to make things go as smooth as possible. Your lawyer will go over all the papers and documents with you to make sure you understand everything and there are no rough spots in your house choice.
When choosing a lawyer, you can use the link below to help you.

Your realtor can help you find a mortgage broker, unless you go through your own bank, a home inspector and a builder and/or contractor for your new home.

Choosing the perfect home!

Step 3: Which Home is Right for you?

Now that you and your spouse have decided that home ownership is right for you and that you are financially ready to start looking at homes the next challenge could be deciding what kind of home to look at.

Some things to consider are:
  • Size
  • Features
  • Stages
  • Location
  • Safety
  • New or Old home
The first thing that I would start with is your lifestage that you are in. If you have small kids, you may not want to be in an apartment you might look for a house that has a backyard.
The types of homes on the left list the features of the basic type of home that you may look at.

**TIP**
Look for a home that will meet your needs for 5 - 10 years.

This tip will help you when your lifestages changes so you do not have to continue to move whenever your lifestage changes.

Can you afford it?

Step 2: Are you Financially Ready?

Are you ready for a new investment in your life where all your extra money may not be extra anymore?  When looking to buy a house there are many financial aspects you need to consider first.
Co- author of "On my Own Two Feet", Manisha Thakor offers 5 steps to knowing your finances.
  • Step 1: Know what your household income is and agree not to spend more than one-third on total housing-related costs.
  • Step 2: Wait until you can afford a 20 percent down payment. It may sound old-fashioned, but it’s excellent protection financially and mentally.
  • Step 3: Don’t try to keep up with your friends and coworkers. The vast majority of them are likely financially clueless.
  • Step 4: If you think you’ll move in less than five years, be VERY sure that you’re buying into a strong housing market. Closing and selling costs will take a big bite out of your finances.
  • Step 5: Don’t be afraid to talk about money. All too often in relationships it becomes the pink elephant in the room.
If you are your spouse agree with these steps and can pass them freely, then it may be time to look at the costs of what your house will be worth.
When looking at your finances you may think about all the simple reasonings behind your money, however, this link will tell you All you need to know! about your money and where it is really going. It has links to calculate your household expenses, debt payments, mortgage payment calculator, and all other costs that you will need to include when looking at your costs.
Find out your Up-Front Costs.by clicking the link and using all your monthly calculations to make yourselves more than ready for buying a home.

Is it right for you?

Step 1: Is Home Ownership Right for You?

Many couples follow in the line of living together, marriage, kids and buying a house, however not everybody is ready for the same life cycle. Deciding if home ownership is the correct decision for you can be stressful and frustrating. You must be financially and emotionally ready to take on a big responsibility to own your own house. Simple questions you may ask yourself are:
  • Do you have the time to be able to maintain the appearance of your house?
  • Are you able to keep up and maintain the outside of your house including gardens, lawns, etc.
Part of buying a house is not just the financial part of it, you must be ready to take care of your house and be able to afford any renovations that you need to make your house a "home".

Scared. Cold. Homeless.

Many people go home everyday after a long day at work or school or some may stay at home all day. Not everyone has this luxury and some people do not have a home that they can go to or even a place to stay.
Imagine yourself in somebody else's shoes walking all over a town for 8 hours a day with people staring at you like you dont belong in this place. As it becomes dark outside you look for a patch of grass that looks comfortable, or maybe a bench. This will be your place to sleep for the night. When you wake up in the morning with dew all over you, and different bugs that may have slept on you for the night, how are you feeling?
You are cold, scared, hungry and homeless.

Some quotes about homeless people are:

"People who are homeless are not social inadequates. They are people without homes."
Sheila McKechnie

"Public housing is more than just a place to live, public housing programs should provide opportunities to residents and their families."
Carolyn McCarthy
